Carlos' Restaurant - fine dining - Highland Park IL (north suburbs)

Went to Carlos the other night.

Food was terrific:

We started off with:
Trio of Asparagus”
Grilled Asparagus with Persian Feta Cheese wrapped in Feuille de Brick,
Asparagus Terrine, and Asparagus-Crème Fraiche Bisque. I love asparagus and all of the above did not disappoint.

Pan-Seared Hudson Valley Foie Gras with Grenadine Infused Caramelized Onion; Medallion of La Belle Farms Cold Foie Gras on Banana Bread with Vanilla Syrup. Didn't get a chance to try this one as the person finished it in record time.

There was also a 1st course special of foie gras and poached lobster. Both of these items are served in heaven.

For the main courses:

I rarely order what I consider "simple" beef (tenderloin, strip) dishes at a fine dining restaurant as there are usually so many other choices that surpass. For some reason the strip was calling out to me, not a mistake, excellent.
Mushroom Crusted 12 oz. Strip Loin with Smoked Heirloom Potato Gnocchi with Artichoke Fricassée and a Thyme Reduction

Both ladies in our group are duck fans and ordered the following. wonderful.
Miso and Coffee Glazed Muscovy Duck Breast with Green Asparagus En Croute, Tapioca-Duck Confit Ragout, Peanut Puree and a Cabernet-Chocolate Reduction

The other gentleman in our group ordered. I only had a chance to snag some of the sweet breads which were crispy on the outside and delicious.
Lemon and Parmesan Crusted Colorado Lamb Rack with Creamy Polenta and Marsalis Reduction with Lamb Sweat Breads, Lemon-Basil Puree and Candied Lemon

Ok, the food was terrific which is the most important item to me, BUT......
Service was terrible, the waiter was not knowledgeable about the menu at all, tried to be very showy with the way he poured drinks (lifting the bottle 2' above the wine glass) which led to splashing, he also simply did not understand about us questioning the items on the menu. The physical aspect of the evening was way off as well. The table was too small for the four of us, add in the ridiculous almost 2 foot tall severely oversized wine glasses and it makes for an evening of non-stop table chess moving items around. Not pleasant at all.

With 10 being the best, Food a 9.8 out of 10 and service/setting a 2 out of 10.
