reward seats availability

I've heard a lot of negative comments about trying to get a standard reward seat on Continental's One Pass program.
But when I plug in my suggested itinerary to nearly any European city I can easily find many 25,000 mile seats available on many dates even in the summer, unlike the Delta or American or Northwest...etc. programs. Yet I keep hearing that AA and Northwest or practically any other program is so much better for getting reward flights. ?
My question is, just because the Continental reservations calendar says there are 25,000 mile seats available does that literally mean they ARE available and you can grab one or is it the case that when you actually log in to reserve one you find out that they are actually sold out? If so, why would the pre-reservation calendar say they are there?
Any help from you much more experienced frequent flyers would be appreciated.
