It's been clear to me for some time that part of the strategy of the other majors (most notably AA) is to hope UA goes out of business. The additional pax and reduced competition in some markets is about the only thing that can save AA short of their own BK filing. As UA has continued to eke out actions that prolong its existence, and as time proves that there is no economic boom on the horizon that will lead to high business fares, it's becoming clear that AA will eventually get to the same place. If (when?) UA hammers out new labor agreements, AA will wave them in front of their unions and say "Why not just give us these concessions now rather than forcing us to file BK to get them?"
