The "no service" problem is that many of the smaller cities in America simply don't generate enough revenues to make it profitable to support the current flight schedules.
Some of those airports may be cut to less than daily flights. Others simply won't be served by any of the majors. Not only would you have to transfer, you'd have to interline, to get to some of the smaller market cities.
Hopefully, either the majors find a working business model or e-ticketing becomes seamless enough to easily interline.
