When I check-in early or am standby for an earlier flight and think that by any chance my bag may have made it on an earlier flight, I stop by the baggage office to check and sometimes get lucky.
While I sympathize with the OP having to wait, this is a teachable moment -- while waiting for the bags to hit the belt, check the baggage office if you think you might be lucky.
