I ended up not needing the return as originally boooked last year, and there have since been many changes to the return, including several changes of origin. This involved numerous ticket exchanges. None of this presented any problems save for interminably long phone calls whilst AA reconstructed on each occasion what had gone before and calculated the fare difference.

I currently have a return trip booked that may be my last chance to use the return half. When I booked it AA only had J availability on the return longhaul sector, which was very frustrating as BA had both C and D that would have done me nicely. It was still cheaper to book it into J using the remaining value in the AA ticket than start again, although I had to pay an extra £1,000 to do so.

Close to departure, AA now have C and (possibly) D availability and I want to downgrade the ticket in terms of fare bucket, but obviously not class.

I cant see why this should be a problem but thought that forewarned is forearmed and wanted to check if anyone could confirm the position and also let me know if there is any industry jargon for this, as it seems to help being able to speak the same language as the sales agents.

Any advice gratefully received, before I give up another precious hour or two on the phone to AA.
When you upgrade a ticket to fully flexible, I thought that you gained only the additional benefits of that ticket (i.e. full refundability) for the additional amount you paid. Thus what you are looking to do is to refund the additional portion and strip your ticket back to its original C bucket, this should be possible although I have never done it myself. It would be very helpful if you had to hand the original T&C's for the first ticket that you bought, this should spell out the terms of any ticket upgrades.
