While the OP probably does not sleep with shoes on, ortho shoes are not always easy to get on/off. I have transported people in the past (my life as an EMT) who told me that it was incredibly painful and slow process to get the shoes on or off. It all depends on the medical condition that called for the shoes in the first place.
The OP was well within the TSA-published guidelines to keeping ortho shoes on. There is no justification for the actions of the TSOs in this case.
