If you had got off at Mainz-Kastel you could have walked up to the busstop at the bridge and took the Bus 6 to Mainz Hbf. You even wouldn't have needed a new ticket since S-Bahn, Regional Trains, Buses, Trams and Subways are integrated in the local public transportation system RMV.
