As has been stated... head to the local embassy ASAP.
Lost my passport in Chicago - was luckly with a UK friend at the time who could validate my existance and get me an emergency passport to get home on.
Upon re-entry to the UK, the emergency passport was surrendered, and I had to go through the rigmaroll of getting a new passport.
Not cheap - but was needed alas.
