At NRT recently, the AA first class checkin lane had a sign with First, EXP, and OW Emerald. The business class checkin line listed Business, Plat, gold, and OW ruby and sapphire.

I still used the first class counter and encountered no questions or problems. I had the same question in my mind as the OP though.
