there is something you could have done. since you were close to the gate watching all this, why didn't you approach her during boarding 'just to check?' it's nice of you not to want to make her job more difficult than it needed to be, but sometimes you need to be just a bit proactive, even if it means other people think you're a bit of a pain--better that than missing your flight.
