Train out of Penn Station wins over other approaches. They're not quite every hour, but nearly so. You can just turn up, buy a ticket, and go.
Be careful - if you're traveling on a holiday weekend, trains will sell out, for example, on the ALB-NYP return on a Sunday/Monday afternoon.
