Last night I was on UAL #831 from IAD to MIA, having just flown in on another flight (from DEN). N picture IDs were required at the IAD gate when boarding, just boarding pases.

The gate agent announced that "at this station, no picture IDs must be shown at the gate - we've seen your ID enough times already".

What's up? Will IDs at the gate become randomly checked in the future?
