I live in Chicago and need to get to OAK to start this OAK-LAX-MIA-IAD-ATL-IAD-JFK-LAX-OAK mileage run ($155.00). ORD-OAK flights for Jan 28 and returning Jan 30 are expensive, and ORD-SFO flights are a bit cheaper ringing in at under $200.

I would miss my 6pm preferred SFO-ORD flight back if I got into OAK at 5:05pm from LAX. That's why I wanted to change to SFO instead of OAK.

Ahh, it all makes perfect sense now. If you don't mind the red-eye, there's an 8:50 p.m. SFO-LAX-ORD flight on 1/30 with the cheap availability on you mentioned (as well as another 10:15 p.m. SFO-LAX-ORD) that gives you enough cushion to cross the bay if the agents don't let you fly to SFO.
