Just wanted to share an experience from my flight this morning--probably the first time this has happened to me that I can recall. I usually like to say hello to the flight deck and thank them for their efforts, and especially now with the
"Meet your pilot" 'promotion', I like to collect the various fleet cards. I walked up towards the front gallery, where the pilot was standing, the conversation went something like this:
Me: "Hello! I just wanted to come up and say hello; are you guys busy right now?"
Pilot: "It's not necessary, we've already got one of you onboard. I already talked to the guy in 22A."
At the point, the purser and I kind of look at each other, and the conversation continues...
Purser: "No, he's not a FAM, he's a passenger."
The pilot seems a bit taken aback, says something (I think he said "Well, who the heck is this guy?", but am not 100% sure), and heads back to the flight deck. Since he never answered my original question, I poked my head in the cockpit and asked:
Me: "Sorry, I wasn't sure, were you guys busy or can I come say hello?"
Pilot: "We have nothing to talk about."
Me:
Well, guess I'll have to wait a lot longer to pick up my 767 fleet card. But that whole experience was just bizarre; it seems a little odd that a passenger is such a foreign concept to this pilot... (Oh, and Channel 9 was not on for the entire flight.)
