Seat Etiquette

I had an unusual and uncomfortable experience last week that has left me uncertain whether I did the right thing or was a real sob?
I had a window seat on a CRJ Regional jet (2x2 seating in small seats). It was a short flight (BNA/ORD). The flight was full, no open seats. When the person arrived for the aisle seat, the first thing he did was raise the center armrest. He was at least 350 pounds. I pushed it back down and held it there. There was an argument and the FA had to come and said it should stay down. I was afraid I was about to be arrested. When he tried to sit down, he couldn't fit, and had to sit sideways the entire flight, still half in my seat and half in the aisle. I felt bad that I had forced him into this bizarre posture, but why, oh why does an airline sell someone like this a single seat on one of these litle planes? I thought I had read that airlines were weighing people.
What should one do in a situation like this?
