All you ever hear about on these boards is ranting about UA's crappy customer service, and here's a story about how someone was taken care of, and yet it's another reason to complain.

How do you know how much this cost UA? And what difference does it make? And I'll go out on a limb and say that if OP had been a 1K or GS then perhaps they would have received the same treatment - how can you know "that kind of courtesy wouldn't ever [sic] be extended"??

I was given an op-up recently from NRT-LAX. I was flying on a non-upgradeable fare and they were selling upgrades into E+. Do you think that hurt UA's "cash position"? All I know is it earned a lot more loyalty from me towards UA.

And from a customer service standpoint, that's money in the bank.
