You'd make a great bean-counter on UA. I respectfully disagree with your position. Yes, UA could have pinched pennies and made the OP wait a day or two for a flight out, OR put him in Y. Instead, the OP was happy with UA in a situation in which it would have been easy to be unhappy. Yes, we are all largely price-conscious consumers. But, I am betting that the OP will consider UA next time he needs to travel, and will remember his experience in France for a long time to come. So, instead of reprimanding the agent, I think UA should give him a pat on the back for retaining a good customer, and for thinking outside the box.
