SLC is the only DL hub where I would chance a 42-minute connection. SLC is rarely troubled by ground congestion or weather, and the gate-to-gate walk times aren't bad. Also, SkyWest is the most reliable Delta Connection operator, IMO.
Now, having said that, if I were transferring on to an international or low-frequency flight, I would not knowingly accept a 42-minute connection anywhere. If your first leg is fifteen minutes late, which you might miss the second or at least be denied boarding. Lateness is more likely in the second half of the day as the schedule unravels, so you have a fighting chance, but still... good luck.
I have a 70-minute connection at DEN (on another airline) to a Canada-bound flight coming up in a few weeks and I already assume it will be destroyed, so I've looked up the alternatives and will arrive armed and ready for disappointment.
Not necessarily true -- at CVG last year, DL held a SEA departure for me and several other late arrivals -- but it was the last westbound of the day. I agree that you're unlikely to encounter any love from DL in the middle of the day.
