Want to fly standby at DFW - can I make it?

I'm flying from LIT-LAX through DFW tonight. My flight 3538 from LIT to DFW arrives in DFW at 6:25 PM. My scheduled DFW-LAX flight (2493) leaves at 10:15 PM, but I wanted to standby for an earlier flight to LAX. Would it be possible for me to make the 6:55 PM flight 2473 (I would need to go from terminal B to C at DFW). If not, could I make flight 1688 departing at 7:25 PM from gate D18?

Also, I don't have any experience with flying standby. Am I supposed to go ahead and check in and receive boarding passes for my 10:15 PM flight to LAX, and then hope I can fly standby for an earlier flight?
