2 planes forced to abort landing at Vancouver airport on same day

VANCOUVER - Two planes were forced to abort landings at Vancouver airport on Wednesday because they were too close to other aircraft on the runway, according to Transport Canada.

It is unusual to have two such near-misses at the same airport in one day, but actions taken by both pilots meant that no one was injured, said Rod Nelson of Transport Canada.

During the first incident on Wednesday, air traffic control told a Westjet 737 plane arriving from Edmonton to pull up from its landing because an Air Canada airbus was taxiing more slowly than expected on the runway. The Westjet flight eventually landed safely.

On the same day, an Air Canada plane arriving from Los Angeles was also asked to abort its landing as a result of a Sunwing Airlines plane "landing and rolling to the end of the runway," said the Transport Canada incident report.

A third plane, operated by Air Canada Jazz, was also noted to be nearby.
