This would work. But it's a bit of a Catch-22. Select status is little more than window dressing unless you ride Amtrak frequently anyway. And if you ride Amtrak frequently anyway, you probably don't need too many $4 runs to make Select.
In other words, the $4 runs are a good way to get to Select if you're near the end of the year and just a few hundred points away. But if you have to spend $100+ and a good chunk of time riding back and forth just to get to Select, ask yourself do you really need the status in the first place?
