No, not an airport policy at all. Other carriers at LHR are happy to recover buggies and return them to the airbridge. This was discussed a while back and it seemed that health & safety implications were being pitched in.

I understand from other parenting forums that the damage to buggies usually occurs when they spring open and the baggage handlers cannot collapse them again properly. A handy tip was to put one of those elasticated cords you use on roof racks around the buggy so if the clip does get knocked, the whole thing stays bundled up.

We bought a Quinny Zapp and have had a good degree of success with carriers allowing it onboard. You get it through security OK then put it in the bag at the gate, sling it over your shoulder and just walk on the plane! BA has been fine on long haul as I recall and I don't think we've taken it short haul. Got it onto an Air Baltic 737 at the weekend too ^

Also be aware that if BA take it from you at the gate at LHR, it's pot luck whether you get it back by the plane or on the carousel at your destination.
