I think it's the transferability issue. I could for example purchase a dozen of the New York to Hawaii at under $300 round trip for lots of dates in the fall around holidays. Hold on to them until a month before, and sell them for many times that.

The airlines don't like people doing that, so they require a name on them now. Prevents the secondary market of ticket sales, prevents them getting way more money from last minute ticket sales, etc.
