Why do airline ticket include names when so many other types of tickets do not?

I know that names are used nowadays to check them against databases and "no-fly" lists, but names have been in airline tickets historically since at least the 60's.

Why do airline tickets include names and are nontransferable when so many other types of tickets (train, bus, concert, etc.) are fully transferable? Anyone know the history of this?
