Indeed, but I didn't really have any such option back in 2004-2005, as there wasn't any internationally recognized ID card for Swedes back then, I couldn't stay in Sweden due to work obligations and the Chinese and Russians certainly weren't going to let me keep my passport while processing my visa application.
