Karen2 - I am afraid that United have given up on the 10,000/10 segement under rule - see other posts on the board. United confirmed in writing that the scenario is correct - the quote I gave was right from their email.

In reply to the suggestion of $25/50000 miles for 2004 status they said:

"You asked that we allow you to pay a fee to attain 1K status next year under a 50,000 mile threshold. I must advise you, we would not be in a position to grant this exception. However, in case you're unaware, United will be recognizing customers who, by year-end, meet published criteria for 2003 status by including a special thank-you in their 2003 credentials packages to show our appreciation of their business and loyalty. Please look to your credentials package mailed in early 2003. "
