I agree with most of your overall point about putting United's decision in perspective. As far as what the genuinely wealthy do, c.f.
The Millionaire Next Door and other similar popular press books on how our perceptions of the behavioral patterns of the genuinely wealthy are skewed in part because some behavior patterns are so much more visible and glamorized than other patterns. I would hope that the well-balanced individual (genuinely wealthy or not) flies discounted coach when possible, keeps track of and takes advantage of programs which allow him or her to fly in business class or first class even so, but
tries not to obsess excessively about the whole thing. Darn, that probably disqualifies most of FT.
