The "why bother"? Was a statement of frustration. I clearly bother as well, and in the end, I've had quite good luck with complementary upgrades. I just beg for it not to be a game. I would gladly (well, not gladly, but respectfully) give up U to someone who ranks above me...I just hate that the system doesn't stick to the list and there are all these ways to sneak in - like if I had called the gold desk last night for the U...and probably jumped ahead of the other golds in front of me since the system didn't automatically take them.
According to what was said at the SFO Gold Lunch, they are in the process of changing the whoel UG process so 1) people are automatically put on an UG waitlist assuming everyone wants to get upgraded and 2) fixing the loopholes in the system so people can't bypass others on the list. Obviously there is more to #2 since it relates to the whole priority rating (ie paying higher than H fare etc). I'm sure we'll all find out more later.
