If you look at this link it shows the *A and fare buckets that earn miles. the Lufthansa S class, according to the chart, earns 50% miles.

An example of the different airlines: UA is partnered with Emirates but US is not so you could earn milage plus miles for flying Emirates but you could not earn US DM. The easiest way to figure it out is to look at the website of the airline to which you want to credit the miles and see if the airline you want to fly is listed and what fare classes are eligable. As previously stated the most important part is the metal flown. It might be listed on, for example, UA becuase it's valid to them but that doesn't necessarily make it valid on US.
