I got this vehicle last week at ORD for a trip up to Wisconsin - it was in the ES section, but I also saw a couple in the EA section when I returned the vehicle. I got it pretty much brand-new - showing 15 miles on the odometer. For comparison, my final rental with Hertz last month was an '07 Highlander. Toyota's made some improvements since then...
Edmunds.com provides a more detailed review
here, but these are my impressions of the vehicle:
Performance/Fuel Economy: The V6 engine (about 275 hp) is quite capable - in an SUV, I'm not expecting throw-your-head-back acceleration, but it did very well both from a stop and at freeway speeds. My drive was mostly rural highway and freeway (~700 miles), and I averaged almost exactly 25 MPG for the trip, which beat the EPA rating by 1 MPG. Not bad considering I had the cruise control set at 74 during the interstate portions of my Tour de Wisconsin Cheese Plants, and I got in an even faster pack of traffic once back in IL on the return trip.
Interior: The cabin of the 2007 Highlander was looking a little dated - it had the same style stereo setup I saw in Camrys going back several years. The '08 has been freshened up a bit and looks more modern. All gauges are now backlit. The stereo system now includes an AUX input in the center console for your iPod/other music device. In the back, they've done something interesting - Edmunds calls it a 40/20/40 split seat. Basically, the middle portion of the rear seat is removable, converting you to two captains chairs with an organizer between (like you'd have in a minivan). The middle portion stores in a pocket accessed at the rear of the center console. Some other tidbits - the car has separate rear climate control. Road noise was very well controlled.
Overall verdict: Toyota rarely disappoints, and this is no exception. I'd drive it again without hesitation.
