I liked the Asoke Residences the least because the rooms just don't feel as luxurious to me as do the normal Sofitel hotels. It feels like an apartment, which I guess is why they're residences and not hotels, which may be fine for some but not my thing. They had a full kitchen, washing machine, etc. and a very large room, which is great if you want to cook, do your laundry or have a family. I don't fall into any of those categories. The other thing was the distance. It's quite a ways down the soi and definitely a good 10 minute brisk walk, longer if your a slow walker. I stayed there when it was hot and when we got some rain some days. Not an enjoyable walk in either case. There is also a small canal along the soi which can create some unpleasant smells along the way. I got very bored with the walk after the second time and if you'll be making the trip several times a day I think you might start to dread the walk.
The Sofitel Grande is less than a 5 minute walk from Nana BTS. I can walk that several times a day and it's no big deal because it's so short. If I felt like going out at midnight for a bite to eat or something else I didn't hesitate because everything was so close whereas if I was at the Sofitel Residences I'd likely forego it. The only thing I don't like about the Sofitel Grande is that the majority of customers there during December will likely be Arab families who do little to control their children, but I don't need to spend any time in the lobby so I try to not let it bother me.
I'm the type of person that doesn't like to spend a lot of time in my room. I like going out and like to come back frequently to shower, rest a bit, then go out again. My room is mainly for resting/sleeping and maybe watching a bit of TV, so location and comfort are important to me, room size or other amenities are not. There's nothing really wrong with the Sofitel Residence rooms, but for the price (much more expensive for me than the Sofitel Grande), and the longer walk I'll never stay there again.
