At LAX TBIT, once you've checked in with your airline, you are required to take your tagged bags to the TSA machines to get them scanned and into the processing phase. Meaning you have to line up not only with your fellow airline passengers, but also with other passengers flying other airlines sharing the same terminal with the airline you are flying that day. Meanwhile at SFO's Int'l terminal, once you've checked your bags with your respective airline, that airline's check-in agent takes your bags in the back of the counter and sends them in and you're done. No need on your own behalf to bring your checked luggages to another queue to deliver them to security.
I just cannot believe two airports in the same state can have such different regulations to baggage processing where the latter provides much more convenience and saves more time for the departing passengers than the former. Shame on LAX/TBIT.
