By consolidating two flights into to one KLM will save an huge amount of money because they need half of the fuel and crew.
It happens often, but not a single airline will ever say so. As a matter of fact, today's KL893 to PVG has been cancelled for what I presume is just that reason. But for the record the reason is, as always, lack of aircraft.
