In most cases it is difficult to determine how many passengers are ahead of you on a waitlist, unless you have some sort of special relationship with an agent. Thes best I've ever gotten is something like this: Me: "How does it look for my upgrade?" UA: "Good". I usually don't push beyond that. An upgrade waitlist can sometimes be closed, presumably because they may have reached some limit?
