In other words, did the front desk clerk try to give you something inferior, and you whipped out the printed res showing the upgrade, and that convinced the clerk to give you the upgraded room?

Or do you always whip out the printed res BEFORE the clerk says anything? If the latter, maybe you would have gotten the upgrade even without showing the printout. @:-)
