The planes involved were a 747 and a 319. Suppose the 747 were traveling at 900 km/h and the 319 at 800 km/h.

If they were 1.29 kilometers apart and flying away from each other, there is no danger at all.

If they were 1.29 kilometers apart and flying directly towards each other they would collide in 2.73 seconds.

So the danger is somewhere between certain death in under 3 seconds and no danger at all.
