The first time I stayed there, about ten years ago, my traveling companion who's pretty wild, asked the bellman where the closest gay bar was. We had just arrived in Montreal and had come from the direction of the city center. The bellman looked kinda uneasy and said he'd have to check. He came back and looked really uncomfortable. He said, "I, myself, am not gay, but a member of the staff says that there is one in the next block". He was incredibly polite, but I've always wondered how he didn't know the info from osmosis.
