I don't think you need a boarding pass at ohare. However, I've always got one before checking in. There are a gazillion easy checkin kiosks, both in the terminal and outside on roadway. (But, alas, I haven't seen a working one pop up in the CTA train entrance, though a few years back there were some non-working ones down there.)
