Surely anyone with a modicum of sense would fly Qantas if they wanted any "frills" at all (like not sitting on the wing). The only reason for flying Virgin Blue (DJ) is that they are often cheaper than QF in cattle class (but don't forget to add on the cost of tea and sympathy, etc, etc). If you want to use the Lounges, buy a Priority Pass (it's also cheaper than a DJ lounge pass).
It looks like whoever came up with the notion of PE on DJ didn't have a clue, and if it's not severely revamped soon, it will just end up losing Virgin Blue a lot of business, as the first 3 rows of any flight will remain empty.
It has nothing to do with being cheaper. Virgin sells a product that is advertised as being premium. On a flight from Brisbane to Townsville it is anything but cheap in PE. The reasons for selecting that flight have more to do with scheduling than price. The quantas options for going between Sydney and Townsville didn't work for my overseas flights to the US. The Virgin option was much better despite needing to change in Brisbane.
