OP, if you just want the gold status as a wallet/whatever candy, it won't do you much good.

Other than the 50% bonus points and the 4pm check out (good luck getting this benefit), you really aren't getting anything. Sure, others have reported gold upgrades here and there, but, that's no different than getting op'd up at United as Premier.

If you want real benefits, try to go for Platinum. Otherwise, just use the extra money to pay for an upgraded room. @:-)
