What if you had the extra purchased segment as the first segment in NA, flew it, then later changed the ticket such that you no longer had extra segments? This would complicate the reprice and possible refund.
There is no refund if you don't fly your extra segment, so this shouldn't be a problem. I think they just want to prevent you from flying the shortest sector in Y.
