I don't think you are doing anything wrong. I have had the same thing happen. Just more united.com weirdness, albeit very, very annoying.
You may need to call and get specific flights sorted out then go back online to book.

I'm not sure what the problem is.
I put in May 23-31 BOS-SEA, 2 Saver First Class request.
The calendars come up, saying that there is nothing on May 23, but there is availability every single day returning in June.
