If UA is on time there is plenty of time to make your onward NZ flight. However UA has a terrible record with Oz flights (see the lengthy thread on delays and cancellations), so there is some misconnect risk (which you bear since separate tickets).
Good point - if time is short, head directly for the gate and bypass the transfer desk. They don't like to, but can generate the boarding pass there.
