I have booked 2 C award tickets this fall on UA 839 - LAX-SYD. I also purchased separately 2 tickets from Sydney to Auckland on Air New Zealand (also Star Alliance) leaving 2 1/2 hours later.

1. Can the baggage be checked through to Auckland in LAX, even if they are on separate itineraries?

2. What is the procedure required in Sydney for transit international passengers regarding baggage & passport control?

3. Providing 839 arrives on time, is 2 1/2 hours sufficent if we have to claim our luggage and recheck it again? What would be the minimum time needed?
