You don't help UA by calling to cancel your return. They already factored in no-shows with overbooking. They're not going to sell more tickets just because you call to cancel.

Actually, by calling you are hurting UA, because you're using telephone reservations time. So, save UA some labor cost and save yourself some trouble, and just don't do anything after the outbound flight.
