How do you "suddenly climb" 10,000'?

Sounds more like they had a TCAS Resolution Advisory (RA). RA's typically have you climb, or descend, 300' to 500'. Perhaps he over did it a bit and climbed 1,000' and the media added an extra zero?

At 33,000' "showing off" won't put you in proximity of another airplane. You are on an assigned altitude which provides at least 1,000' (2,000' in some airspace) vertical separation from other flights.
