I tried the freezing trick, and still got the same periodic "click"... also, i could not boot up any OS with the drive installed in a SATA slot (tried Vista from other drives & Ubuntu from CD)... guess that drive is now a brick.
It doesn't always work but it's worth a shot. The thing is, the likely failure mode is the bearings seizing up. The freezing technique helps unstick the bearings. If the actual failure is anything else it doesn't help one bit and it doesn't always free the bearings anyway.
