I tried the freezing trick, and still got the same periodic "click"... also, i could not boot up any OS with the drive installed in a SATA slot (tried Vista from other drives & Ubuntu from CD)... guess that drive is now a brick.

I don't even feel comfortable disposing of the drive since it is conceivable that somebody could do an expensive repair and then access all of my data!
Open it up and go nuts on the platter. Scratch it, burn it, run it over with your car. Have fun!
