At Roma Termini and Napoli Centrale you can indeed pay with a credit card at machines, but:
1. You have to choose a machine with credit card logos. At Napoli Centrale the machines are grouped together, and most take credit cards but one or two don't and those don't have the logos above them.
2. It's confusing which way they want you to insert the card, and if you insert wrong once or twice, the machine may get confused and then never accept your card and you have to start over.
Whatever you do, do not use the place that looks like it sells train tickets but says "365" on it. That's a travel agency which tacks on
enormous surcharges. Either use the machines or find the
official Trenitalia ticket office (which may be further away).
